Seattle Metropolitan names Queen Anne one of the best places to live in Seattle in 2010!

Posted on April 28th, 2010 by Editor

Seattle Metropolitan magazine has named Queen Anne one of the best Seattle neighborhoods to live in in 2010!

And I can’t say that I blame them! Seattle Met chatted with Queen Anne Farmers Market director Julie Whitehorn about what makes QA–or as I call it, the other hill– so great. Read the full piece here.

Queen Anne appreciation moment: Here are some of neighborhood’s highlights:

Have another reason why Queen Anne rocks? Share it in the comments below!

They interviewed Julie Whitehorn?! The same Julie Whitehorn who tried and failed to keep a minority- owned business from opening?! And under the guise of alcohol sales, all the while she was applying for a permit to sell alcohol by a middle school?!!!!

    Give us a break!

What's your angle here? You are obviously invested beyond a psuedo “outraged” citizen. Sore loser perhaps? Whatever your ruse is it won't work. Julie is beloved in this neighborhood and beyond.

It's a bit difficult at the moment to come up with praise for Queen Anne when my vehicle has been broken into twice in the last 8 weeks and where some neighbors call the police to remove cars that are parked on the street for less than 24 hours in front of their house. Maybe the car isn't expensive enough for the neighborhood?

Julie Whitehorn has embarassed many Queen Anne residents with her shameless self promotion and attacks on others. She may be respected by you, but I can assure you there are many Queen Anne residents, including Coe parents, who are tired of her.

“In my Seattle neighborhood of Queen Anne, everything necessary to life except a hospital and a gas station is within a two mile walk. If you don't drive and don't get sick, you can go from cradle to grave and never leave this map.

And if coffee's your thing, Queen Anne is the dark, hot heart of coffee culture in Seattle.

I've begun to take a two-mile daily walking tour of my neighborhood in Seattle's Queen Anne. This is mostly because of the elemental concept that I should get at least some exercise on a daily basis. It's also because of my long held belief that even with a route that is well worn and well traveled and well known, you can, if you open your mind discover something new every day.”

    “sore loser”?

Umm, 5 corners sells beer and wine. That makes Whitehorn and Tausch the losers.

    Try and keep up Blanche.

  • Mini Mart

I wasn't on Julie's side with regards to the mini mart opening but she has a right to advocate for her position just as you and I have a right to advocate for ours. Having said this, personal attacks and misrepresenting her position is petty and unproductive. Move on already.

Some history for QA newbies: some people wanted the farmers market at Coe Elementary instead of Crockett Street. They didn't get their way. Now when they see someone advocating for a great neighborhood or promoting volunteerism and community spirit (see the linked article), they get confused, and consider it an “attack.” It's the ugly side of Queen Anne. Thank goodness it is the exception not the rule.

No, not really.Whitehorn and Tausch fought tooth and nail to keep a minority-owned business off their precious little corner of white America.

You'll notice they have no objection to Ken's Market selling five times as much alcohol as 5 corners. I suspect that's because Ken's is white owned.

I'll do my best even though I wasn't the author.

It's my understanding that Julie Whitehorn appealed 5 corner's liquor license application on the grounds that beer sales would be too close to a grade school. At the same time, Whitehorn applied for a liquor license to permit sales of wine (much higher alcohol content than beer) immediately adjacent to McClure middle school.

The word you're looking for is Hypocrit.

QA Dad, you are sad. Intimating racism is involved in the choice not to have another fortified alcohol and “cheap cigarettes!” outlet in the neighborhood is totally unfounded, petty, and really –get a life! You are hate-mongering here. And you are baseless. Move on.

    “fortified alcohol”?

Ken's sells alcoholic beverages that contain almost TWICE the alcohol content contained in any “fortified” product. And they do so with five or six times the shelf space.

Humor us, on a weekly basis, who do you think sells more alcohol?

    “cheap cigarettes”?

You mean like the cigars (used exclusively for smoking pot) that the Safeway on QA Ave sells?

Why isn't Whitehorn petitioning for the closure of those businesses? Her action is focused in a peculiar way.

I'd love to hear your response. I really would. Any time this topic comes up with my neighbors, not one, NOT ONE, is in agreement with Whitehorn. ZERO support.

She has made an ass of herself.

Sorry to see so many posts about the he said/she said argument about selling booze in the hood.
I was expecting comments about how QA has changed in the last few years with the densification along QA Ave. I certainly have seen my share of self-absorbed Gen X & Y living off too much credit strutting up and down the Ave.
QA thankfully has some elements of its blue collar past left before the fake money and phony attitude take over.

QADad is so far off the mark, it's almost laughable. I feel like I'm watching Glenn Beck.

The fight against the Mini-Mart had absolutely NOTHING to do with race, and attempting to make that an issue is a cheap shot. The Farmers Market Ms. Whitehorn runs is full of people of all races. How do you explain that?

It also had NOTHING to do with competition or hypocrisy. You cleverly neglected to mention that the FARMERS MARKET STARTS SHORTLY BEFORE SCHOOL IS OUT FOR THE WHOLE SUMMER. And seriously…you don't see a distinction between selling alcohol at a Farmers Market for 8 hours a week, and selling it a Mini-Mart for 16 hours a day?

The issue of the Mini-Mart was nothing more than this: a group of concerned neighbors did not want a store similar to Manhattan Express (which any west precinct police officer will tell you gets a lot of calls) to get a foothold in their neighborhood. That's it.

You can't use logic and rational arguments to make your case, so you resort to histrionics and baseless allegations. Pretty sad…

I'm not sure why, but QADad is extremely creepy…like sociopath creepy.

Another person accuses Whitehorn of being a racist, and then when it's pointed out that many races work at her farmers market, someone says it's because she likes the cheap labor. So if she employed only white people at the market, she wouldn't be racist?

“You can't win an argument with an idiot who thinks he knows everything.”
    –Dwight Eisenhower

Why is it that almost every online forum like this has to be populated by a few ignorant trolls who bring the level of discourse down to the schoolyard bully level? People like QADad can't form a cohesive argument and make their case, so they just resort to mindless, giggly, ignorant stupidity.

Signing off. I'm looking forward to the farmers market…

Is it so obvious? You're WAY off the mark my friend, and the dumbest thing about it is that even if the author said “no, my actual name is Joe Smith”, you would still say “yeah right, it's so obviously Whitehorn & Tasch”.

But the truth is, you have no idea who “Name” is. You are asserting as fact something that you have no factual basis for. Now THAT is pathetic. Who in their right mind would reveal their real name to a few people that sound a little unhinged? So you can egg our houses or key our cars?

Here's an idea: keep the conversation civil, and conduct yourself like an adult instead of a steroid-crazed angry teenager. Have a discussion and express facts and opinions, without hurling insults and baseless allegations, and maybe the conversation can get somewhere.

What you are doing…you are doing ONLY because no one can see you or find out who you are. What do you hope to accomplish by turning a simple debate into a food fight?

In response to “name” below, who says “(which any west precinct police officer will tell you gets a lot of calls)”. I tried finding a blog post on the SPD blotter or seattlecrime and no reference is made to the store (or the block its located on) you mentioned.

There were a lot of posts next to the Seattle Center. Based on your reasoning you may want to consider petitioning then as well.

That’s ironic…”name” gives himself applause, and then calls the other “Name” insane.

And skibum1175: no mention was made of blogs or police blotters, which contain only a tiny fraction of police calls. You can ask the west precinct for a log of all calls to Manhattan Express…74 calls in 2009 for everything from shoplifting to people passing out drunk in the store, etc
