Vinny 1Meet Vinny!

My name is Vinny and not to brag, but I’m probably about the cutest puppy you have ever seen, with my brown “goggles,” ears and freckles. I’m a Pomchi (Pomeranian-Chihuahua) with a bit of Chinese-Crested too. I will stay a nice convenient size. I’m about four months old now and I’ve been going to puppy play group which is a lot fun. Even though I’m the smallest one there, I have made many good friends with the big dogs, as long as they don’t squash me!

I sleep in my crate at night, but like every puppy, I need to get out for a bathroom break. I like to roughhouse and play fetch and tug of war, but I really enjoy curling up on a nice warm lap for a nap (did I mention I’m the perfect size for a lap?) I’m affectionate and energetic and get very excited when I meet new people or animals. I’m sure I’d be a great addition to the right family!

Vinny 2There is no such thing in all the world as an unattractive puppy – they’re made this way so we don’t throttle them for the mischief they can cause! But they will only be an adorable puppy for a short period of time, before long they’ll be an active, demanding, adult dog, so be fully prepared for a life-long commitment before you apply.

Adopting a puppy is great fun, but puppies require a LOT of dedicated time for training and socialization, including exposure to many different situations. This means puppy classes, lots of daily exercise, playtime, attention, and ongoing training will be essential as this dog will be energetic and playful for many years to come. A household or guardian who is ready to take on the challenges of housetraining, grooming, and making sure their new family member becomes a well adjusted canine citizen is necessary.

Vinny 3Because puppies have very sharp and persistent needle-like teeth, they may not be suited to a home with small children. This pup will no doubt be a very active and smart adult dog, and needs an active, energetic guardian who can provide lots of mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom – as dogs will make their own fun, and their definition of fun might not be the same as yours! Please do some research on bringing up puppies before submitting an application for adoption.

Dog Star Daily is a great website to help you determine if a puppy is right for you, and which breed. Check out the Training Text book section and all the fabulous topics under that title. And, in an attempt to educate prospective puppy owners before they get their puppies, Dr. Ian Dunbar has offered his book ”BEFORE You Get Your Puppy” for free. Finally, here’s another great free resource for what to do once you bring your new pup home.

Vinny (SAS ID #15-115) is cuddled up in a foster home. If you would like to meet him, you must submit a Dog Adoption Application to SAS. Download the application and follow the instructions for submitting it via email or fax. Or, you may pick up an application at the Shelter. If you have general questions about Vinny, you may call the Shelter’s Animal Care Staff at 206-386-4294.
