Residents who live in Lower Queen Anne may be affected by a couple of upcoming planned power outages in the area. Seattle City Light has scheduled two power outages in order to repair damage from the outage on the Seattle Center campus last month, the first of which will be held on this coming Thursday, April 22 from 12 to 7 a.m. No date has been set yet for the second power outage yet, though according to Seattle City Light, it is planned for sometime in mid to late May.
The primary feed line has been out of service since the March outage, and so the Seattle Center campus has been running on the secondary (back-up) feed. These two planned outages will promote the replacement of one of the aging primary feed lines. Two outages have been planned because of the size and scope of the issue.
The affected outage area will be within the following borders: Mercer Street to the north; Denny Way to the south; 5th Avenue N to the east; and 1st Avenue N to the west.
Residents within this boundary, but outside of the Seattle Center campus, who may be affected by the planned outages should have received notification letters from Seattle City Light. Seattle Center will be providing temporary exterior lighting on seven on-campus locations during the outage “to provide some level of light and safety,” according to a notice from Seattle City Light.

If you’re traveling off the hill tomorrow, keep in mind there may be added traffic. The southbound right hand lane of the Aurora Bridge will be closed on Wednesday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to allow Seattle Department of Transportation bridge crews to complete repairs on the underside of the bridge.

When trekking out and around Queen Anne next week, keep in mind that SDOT has planned repairs on several bridges surrounding the neighborhood that may delay your commute on and off the hill.
The westbound, left lane of the Emerson St. overpass at 15th Ave W will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 to Saturday, Jan. 23, so that crews may repair a concrete deck. From 9: a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 through Thursday, Jan. 21 the traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the Queen Anne Bridge while crews make concrete repairs. The northbound, right curb lane of the Fremont Bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 for maintenance work. And finally, from 10 a.m to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 through Friday, Jan. 22, and Monday and Tuesday of the following week, Jan. 25 and 26, the southbound, right lane on the Ballard Bridge will be closed for guard rail repairs.
Although SDOT has set the schedule, these dates and times are subject to change “in the event that other unplanned, urgent needs arise.”

Parking will by sparse on Queen Anne Ave N today. Four Seattle City Light trucks have blocked off east side street parking so that they can repair some faulty street lights.

Crews will be working until 3 p.m. this afternoon between Blaine and Howe on Queen Anne Ave.

According to one City Light worker, the street lights they are trying to repair have been “out for some time,” and should be working again later today.

Remember to drive cautiously through the work zone.

Seattle City Light says power is fully restored to Seattle Center and those between Queen Anne Ave. N, Taylor Ave. N, Denny Way and Mercer St. who lost power in the two outages this morning. The first outage, at about 5 a.m. this morning, left 6,800 without power on the hill due to a failed underground vault. The second outage occurred at 11 a.m. Unable to fix this problem, City Light shut off power this afternoon to handle the repairs, affecting the Seattle Center Grounds, 50-70 businesses nearby and two apartment buildings. Everyone should have their power back now.

Just a reminder there will be another planned power outage tomorrow morning, Monday, October 26, from around midnight to 7 a.m. (set your cell phones accordingly!) so that Seattle City Light can make further repairs to the underground electrical distribution system damaged in the previous recent outages.
City Light should have already contacted your if you’re going to be affected by this outage (the same group of businesses and residents who were affected by the planned power outage on Sunday, September 27). However, last time many people who were not notified in advance lost power.

Just a reminder, Seattle City Light will be shutting down power at Seattle Center and some of the surrounding areas tomorrow, Saturday, September 26 from approximately midnight to 8 a.m., to attend to “urgent repairs” needed to the area’s electrical distribution system, caused by last week’s surprise power outage. (The cable/splice failure that occurred in an electrical vault at 5th Ave. N. & Mercer St. that caused the outage last Wednesday needs to be fixed).
Power will be turned off in the general area from Queen Anne Ave. on the west to Taylor Ave. on the east, and from Denny Way on the south end to Mercer St. to the north. Seattle City Light emphasized that not everyone within these boundaries will lose power.
Mike Eagan from Seattle City Light emailed me to reiterate that those who will have their power shut off have already been notified by the city. He writes,
Only those businesses who received written notification directly from City Light will be affected.
So if you haven’t heard from City Light, your power should be unaffected by the scheduled outage.
