Lower Queen Anne leads in Seattle Beer News poll asking which neighborhood needs a new brewery

    March 8th, 2011 by Thea

Before you ask, yes, there is a publication called Seattle Beer News. They are one of The Seattle Times’ news partners, alongside us, the rest of the Next Door Media team, and and a number of other neighborhood and special interest news services in the greater Seattle area.

Although no Queen Anne pubs made Seattle Beer News’ recent list of Top 10 Seattle Beer Spots, our neighborhood is leading in a poll SBN is putting on asking Seattle-ites which neighborhood most needs a new beer bar or brewery.

So far Lower Queen Anne is leading with 16 percent of the votes, followed by Ballard, South Lake Union and Wallingford (all with 12 percent), and Magnolia and Lake City (with 11 percent). Upper Queen Anne is in tenth place, with 6 percent of the votes so far.

Think Queen Anne needs a new beer bar or brewery more than any other neighborhood? Cast your vote with Seattle Beer News here.

Next Door Media partners with MyGreenLake

June 22nd, 2010 by Geeky Swedes

We’re excited to announce that we’ve partnered with MyGreenLake.com, one of Seattle’s best neighborhood news sites. Edited by Amy Duncan, My Green Lake is teaming up with Next Door Media’s editorial and sales network in North Seattle.

My Green Lake launched in 2009, and the site quickly became the community’s source for news and events in the Green Lake neighborhood.

This is our first partnership with an existing neighborhood blog. Earlier this year, we launched UDistrictDaily.com in collaboration with the University of Washington’s The Daily newspaper.

With the addition of My Green Lake, Next Door Media’s network now includes ten neighborhood blogs spanning the majority of North Seattle, from the Space Needle to Northgate Mall and Elliott Bay to Lake Washington.

    PhinneyWood wins national journalism award

May 3rd, 2010 by Geeky Swedes

Congratulations to our sister site PhinneyWood.com for winning a prestigious national journalism award. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced this morning that PhinneyWood won the Online Deadline Reporting (Independent) category for the devastating arson fire on October 23, 2009, “Three-Alarm Fire Destroys Greenwood Businesses.”

“…We were on the scene moments after the call came in and posted updates throughout the day. We also received dozens of email tips and photos from PhinneyWood readers. So, this award is also a testament to the power of community journalism,” editor Doree Armstrong writes.

The SPJ Sigma Delta Chi awards are judged by veteran journalists around the country. Judges went through more than 1,300 entries for awards covering online, newspaper, magazine, television and radio. Read PhinneyWood’s announcement here.

New neighborhood blog breaks new ground

April 22nd, 2010 by Doug Alder

We’re happy to announce there’s a new member in our network of North Seattle community news sites.  U District Daily will bring you all the news and events in Seattle’s University District.  This is an exciting venture for all of us here at Next Door Media.  It’s part of a groundbreaking partnership with the University of Washington’s student-run newspaper The Daily, spanning both daily news coverage and advertising — the first of its kind in the country.  The site is authored by Christian Caple, an editor for The Daily, and neighborhood ads will be sold by the newspaper’s own advertising staff.  The new site will focus on both the UW campus and the entire U-District neighborhood.  We invite you to check it out!    You can read more about the partnership here.

Hyperlocal news & the changing face of journalism

    March 16th, 2010 by Doree

SeattlePI.com has a great article today about the changing nature of journalism, especially the explosion of hyperlocal news websites such as ours.

In the old days of print journalism, people got all their basic news from their local newspaper and maybe a national paper such as the Wall Street Journal or New York Times. But, in the last few years, everything has changed as newspapers go out of business (the P.I.’s presses fell silent one year ago tomorrow) and media companies consolidate and try to figure out how to do more with less.

In today’s article, Journalist/Blogger Monica Guzman interviewed the owners behind a number of Seattle-area sites, such as West Seattle Blog (which can be credited with creating the whole hyperlocal phenomenon), Techflash, Neighborlogs, Next Door Media (which owns QueenAnneView, MyBallard, Phinneywood, etc.), PubliCola, InvestigateWest and Crosscut.

If you’re at all interested in where your news comes from, check it out.
