If you’re planning to give to one of your favorite local nonprofits this year, it’s going to be even easier this Wednesday, May 15th. That’s the date for The Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG, a one-day, online charitable giving event to inspire people to give to local nonprofit organizations who help make up the tapestry of our community.
All day Wednesday each credit card donation made to any of the 1,400+ nonprofit organizations profiled on The Seattle Foundation’s website will receive a prorated portion of the matching funds “stretch” pool. The total amount of the stretch pool depends on the size of the stretch pool and how much is raised in total donations on GiveBIG day.
The list of participating Queen Anne nonprofits includes:
And, you can donate to many more nonprofits in the immediate Queen Anne/Seattle Center area, as well as Seattle-wide nonprofits (e.g. Seattle Public Library). Just check out the list of nonprofits and get ready to GiveBIG on Wednesday.

Join The Seattle Foundation tomorrow, May 2, for the second annual GiveBIG– a one-day, online charitable giving event to benefit nonprofits in our community. Donations made to nonprofits through The Seattle Foundation’s website will be stretched further thanks to The Seattle Foundation and GiveBIG sponsors, who will match a share of every contribution.
“Each donation made through The Seattle Foundation’s website between midnight and midnight (Pacific Time) on May 2, 2012 will receive a pro-rated portion of the matching funds (or “stretch”) pool. The amount of the “stretch” depends on the size of the stretch pool and how much is raised in total donations on GiveBIG day. For example, if a nonprofit organization receives 3 percent of the total donations during GiveBIG, then it will receive 3 percent of the stretch pool, so the more donations you give through GiveBIG on May 2 the more it will benefit SIFF,” reads SIFF’s email on the campaign.
Other causes seeking donations locally include Ballard Food Bank, Ballard High School Foundation, Queen Anne Helpline, Seattle Pacific University, Queen Anne High School Alumni Association, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, Girls on the Run Puget Sound, Historic Seattle Preservation Foundation, Seattle Audubon Society, and Yoga Behind Bars.
The full list of participants can be found here.
So, pick your favorite nonprofit, rally your friends, and give online. Your gift will grow bigger, thanks to funds from generous GiveBIG sponsors.

Today is your chance to donate to Queen Anne charities and have your money go further.
The Seattle Foundation is hosting the “GiveBIG” challenge from 7 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. to support a long list of charities around town, a great many of which are based right here in Queen Anne, including the American Cancer Society – Great West Division, ArtsFund, Book-It Repertory Theatre, Forgotten Children’s Fund, Friends of KEXP, GreenStage, Hilltop Children’s Center, KCTS Television, Northwest Folklife, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pacific Science Center, Pottery Northwest, Queen Anne Helpline, Seattle Center Foundation, Seattle Children’s Home, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, SIFF, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Puget Sound Affiliate, Whim W’Him and more.
The money donated to charities through GiveBIG will be “stretched” by $500,000. Here is how the “stretch pool” and match works:
Credit card donations made during this time period will be counted as GiveBIG donations and used to calculate distribution of the stretch pool. The amount of a nonprofit organization’s share of the stretch pool will be based on the percentage of donations the nonprofit receives of the total online contributions made through www.seattlefoundation.org on June 23. In other words, distribution of the stretch pool will be pro-rated. If X organization receives 1% of the donations through our site on GiveBIG, they will receive 1% of the stretch pool dollars.
Here is the long list of charities that are participating. There will also be a Golden Ticket given away every hour. Donors will be chosen at random to have more money donated to the charity they chose to support. Most tickets are worth $1,000 but the one-time extra special Golden Ticket is worth $5,000.
