As part of a summer of fun and free programs, the Seattle Center is kicking off its Summer Fitness 2013 “Step, Stretch and De-Stress” series of classes this week. Summer Fitness 2013 is open to all ages and abilities, and the classes are free:

Zumba Class: dance-based exercise that provides an adventurous journey around the world through exhilarating Latin music, World Rhythms, West African, belly dance, dance hall, pop, classic rock, etc. The workout is high energy, easy to follow choreography, and fun! Water, a towel, workout clothes, and comfortable sneakers are suggested.
Tuesdays, June 18 – Aug. 20, 6pm-7pm, Fisher Pavilion Rooftop
Gentle Yoga allows participants to gently stretch their bodies and breathe stress away while enjoying lots of fresh air. The class focuses on fluid movements to increase range of motion and joint and muscle flexibility. Bring your own yoga mat.

Bonsai Media Group is hosting a free social media class for seniors this Thursday. “Social Media for Silver Foxes” will focus on teaching seniors how to use Facebook to connect with their families and friends. The instructors will also answer questions on Skype and Twitter. The class is free and will be held on Thursday, January 24th from 2pm-4pm at Bayview Retirement Community.
The course will cover the following topics via hands-on personal help:
- Signing up for accounts
- Creating profiles
- Step-by-step Facebook instructions
- Scanning & posting family photos
- Staying secure online
So, if you know of a senior who’s interested in jumping into social media and connecting with others via Facebook – or if you’re interested yourself – you can call 206.281.5768 to reserve a spot or get more information.

Starting this Saturday, February 27, Yogalife, will be offering a free weekly Sivananda community class with instructor Mandi Grover.
Sivananda is a style of hatha yoga and is a good balance of breathing (pranayama), postures (asana) and relaxation (savasana). The class can be seen as a moving meditation where you slowly move through holding steady postures, allowing yourself to focus your energy and attention inward.
Yogalife in Queen Anne is located at located at 8 Boston St. The Saturday classes will be help every Saturday from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. through Saturday, March 27.

We’ve been reporting on the soon-to-be pilates studio opening on Queen Anne Ave N since August. And now, the time has finally come. Originally set to open in early October, the date was pushed back to January due to a manufacturing delay in the production of their machines. However, though they won’t officially be opening their doors for group classes until next month, Inspire Pilates is currently offering pre-opening specials for interested customers looking to try out their unique brand of pilates.
The workout – called SPX fitness – is based on the holistic principles of pilates, combined with elements of strength training and cardio. It’s designed to be an all-in-one workout focused on muscle toning and calorie burning.
When they’re all set up for their official opening, there will be nine machines in the studio for small group classes, and they will be offering one-on-one sessions and buddy workouts. However, until their opening next month, owner Sue Hahm is offering free 20 minute sessions for anyone interested in getting a taste of Inspire Pilates before attending a full class.
