QA wading pool season extended three days

August 16th, 2011 by Thea

Seattle Parks and Recreation announced today that it will be extending operations at 11 of the city’s wading pools, adding a few more days to make up for the cool and rainy weather that forced the pools to close on a number of scheduled dates earlier in the summer. This means, the season will be extended  from August 21 to August 28 at the wading pool here in Queen Anne and ten others citywide.

From the press release:

Because of budget reductions, Parks stretched its summer program budget by planning for a longer season at the wading pools with the most attendance, and a shorter season for those with lower attendance rates, thus keeping as many wading pools open as possible.

Cool, rainy weather caused Parks not to open wading pools on quite a number of days this summer, and the savings from those “closures” enables Parks to extend the season at the “short season” sites.

The wading pool at the East Queen Anne Playfield was one of those “short season” sites, which will now be open from noon to 7 p.m. for three additional days, August 22, 23, 28. All 11 wading pools receiving operation extensions:

  • Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave. N – August 24, 25, 26, Noon – 7 pm
  • Cal Anderson Park, 1635 11th Ave. – August 26, 27, 28, Noon – 6:45 pm
  • Dahl Playfield, 7700 25th Ave. NE – August 23, 24, 25, Noon – 7 pm
  • Delridge Community Center, 4501 Delridge Way SW – August 25, 26, 27, Noon – 6:45 pm
  • East Queen Anne Playfield, 160 Howe St. – August 22, 23, 28, Noon – 7 pm
  • E.C. Hughes Playground, 2805 SW Holden St. – August 24, 25, 26, Noon – 7 pm
  • Hiawatha Community Center, 2700 Calif. Ave. SW – August 22, 23, 24, Noon – 6:45 pm
  • Soundview Playfield, 1590 NW 90th St. – August 22, 27, 28, Noon – 7 pm
  • South Park Community Center, 8319 8th Ave. S – August 22, 23, 28, Noon – 7 pm
  • Wallingford Playfield, 4219 Wallingford Ave. N – August 24, 25, 26, Noon – 7 pm
  • Powell Barnett Park, 352 Martin Luther King. Jr. Way  – August 27 and Sept. 3, Noon – 7 pm*

*Powell Barnett Park wading pool operates only on Saturday; its schedule will be extended by two weeks to include August 27 and Sept 3

Understandably the extended pool dates are weather permitting. Parks and Recreation says they will be open as planned if the weather forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s. For more information check the wading pool hotline, which is updated each day by 9 a.m., at 206-684-7796.

Canlis to host 4th annual Block Party Sunday

August 14th, 2010 by Thea

The Canlis restaurant is hosting its fourth annual surprise Block Party for the neighborhood this Sunday, August 15, from 12 to 3 p.m. at Little Howe Park/East Queen Anne Playfield (located at 1912 Warren Ave N).

The restaurant, which celebrates 60 years on the hill this year, says the party is a  way of getting the community together for a fun time and saying thanks.

The Block Party will be stocked with free burgers, prepared on-site by Canlis staff, shaved ice, live Hawaiian music, face painting, and a special appearance by Queen Anne firefighters.

And following tradition, the party will culminate with an epic tug-o-war battle between Canlis and the Queen Anne neighborhood. (See pictures from last year’s block party here).

Last year the Canlis Block Party raised over $1,700 for the Queen Anne Helpline. This year all proceeds will benefit the Queen Anne Farmers Market.

Swing by the event, or follow the action on Twitter at #CanlisBlockParty and @canlis.
