Car prowls are not an uncommon occurrence for Queen Anne-ers, but one reader, Kevin Smith, has noticed an uptick in incidents in the Interbay area recently. He writes:
Last week, my work truck was broken in to, the back door lock and latch was completely destroyed. Nothing was stolen, no tools, ladders, nothing. I think the prowlers were after spooled wire. Coming out to my truck this morning, I saw that another vehicle was broken in to. This time, it was a Chevy HHR work vehicle, belonging to a security (construction) company. I can only assume that they were after wire also with this break in, but I didn’t go close enough to the rig to see inside.
Kevin says both prowls happened on 14th Ave W, right next to Gilman Drive W. And according to the Seattle Police Department’s
neighborhood crime map, in the last week alone there have been four reported care thefts, and another four prowls in the Queen Anne area. Remember to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in the neighborhood to help prevent you and your neighbors from becoming a prowl target.

A 45-year-old woman who has been squatting in a Queen Anne home for the last couple of weeks was arrested by Seattle police on suspicion of fraud and identity theft spanning across multiple states earlier today, according to Detective Jeff Kappel, who published the following information on the SPD Blotter.
On May 12th officers began investigating a complicated fraud/identity theft/criminal impersonation situation in which a female suspect had attempted to lease a residence using a false name and then managed to occupy it without making any payment. The residence in question is located in the 2700 block of 5th Avenue West.
After some investigation SPD officers discovered that the suspect had two felony fraud warrants from Nevada out on her. Officers attempted to contact her at the house but were unsuccessful until, at approximately 7:45 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 25, they located her driving in the alleyway in the 2400 block of 4th Avenue West. The suspect was then taken into custody, at which time “numerous identification documents in different names” were found in her possession.
The suspect was booked into the King County Jail on Investigation of Criminal Impersonation and Investigation of Fugitive. A preliminary investigation of her local crimes estimates the total financial loss to be over $10,000, according to the report. Seattle Police Fraud, Forgery and Financial Exploitation (FFFE) detectives will be handling an on-going investigation of this incident.

At approximately 1:46 a.m. on Saturday, March 14 Seattle Police were called to the 1800 block of Queen Anne Ave N, the site of a robbery and assault. The victim was walking to her home, just two blocks away, when the suspect, described only as a black male wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and with long black hair, grabbed her purse, according to the police report.
The victim managed to dial 911 on her iPhone, but while on the phone the suspect grabbed her and dragged her about 20 feet, according to the report. The suspect took the cell phone out of her hands and proceeded down W Howe Street, however the victim was able to wrestle her purse back from the suspect before he left the scene.
A witness to the robbery told police they saw the crime unfold, but was afraid to get involved in case the suspect had a weapon.
The victim, who reportedly had scraped knees and elbows from the attack but no further injuries, declined medical attention and told police “she just wanted her phone back,” the report said. A couple of units reported to the scene of the crime and conducted an extensive area check, but were not able to locate the suspect.

We’ve just caught wind of some more details from a daytime home invasion in Queen Anne last week in which robbers held the 74-year-old resident at gunpoint while searching her house. According to a report by SeattleCrime.com, the two robbers may have targeted the wrong house. From SeattleCrime:
Just before 9:00 am on May 4th, two armed men burst through the back door of a home on 10th Ave W and W Fulton St.
When the 74-year-old victim spotted the men in her kitchen, one man pulled a gun and told her to tell them where her safe was.
The woman said she didn’t have one, and told the suspects they “must have the wrong house.”
As the suspects searched the house, they told the victim “they were sorry, but times are tough” and promised they wouldn’t hurt her if she didn’t give them any trouble, a police report says.
The men were carrying plastic zip ties, but did not tie the woman up during the robbery.
Police say the suspects rummaged through the woman’s home for about a half-hour. At one point during the robbery, the victim’s phone rang, and one of the suspects ripped the phone line out of the wall.
The suspects eventually fled the home with jewelry, money and two “family guns,” the report says.

Seattle police are looking for two suspects who reportedly held a Queen Anne resident at gunpoint while robbing her home this morning. According to the SPD Blotter, officers were called to the 1000 10 block of Fulton Street at the top of the hill at approximately 9:19 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, May 4.
The victim, a 74-year-old woman, told police that the two suspects, who she didn’t know and are described only as “possibly Asian or Latino males” in the report, entered her residence through an open back door at around 8:30 a.m. From the report:
The victim stated that the suspects had plastic ‘zip-ties’ with them, and one of the suspects was armed with a small black pistol.
The suspects held the victim at gunpoint inside her residence. The suspects went through the victim’s residence, taking a large amount of jewelry, cash and two firearms.
The victim, who was not injured in the robbery, called 911 after the suspects left. SPD officers conducted an area search for the suspects, canvassing the surrounding area for other potential victims and evidence of the robbery, but were unable to locate the suspects, or any evidence or witnesses. If you have any information about this crime, please contact SPD immediately.

From the SPD Blotter:
On 4/30/11, at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers responded to the 2000 block of Westlake Ave N. for a shots fired call. When they arrived there was a large disturbance in the parking lot.
Officers were ascertaining what was happening when they heard more shots. A male was seen running from the area. After the situation was under control, officers found a pistol (a reported stolen) and shell casings at the scene.
At approximately 2:10 a.m., officers were informed that an uncooperative gunshot victim had arrived at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). Gang detectives went there to interview the “victim”. The “victim” was the subject seen running away from the scene of the earlier shots call, he had a gunshot wound to his right thigh.
The angle of the GSW wound appeared as though the subject shot himself either when pulling out his gun or “re-holstering” it in his waistband. The gun was handled for DNA. The 22-year-old male was left at HMC for treatment. Gang detectives will be conducting the follow-up.
There were no other reports of injured victims or property damage.

Queen Anne resident Martin Ramirez was the victim of another car prowl on the hill this weekend. He wanted to relay the event to serve as a reminder to neighbors to not leave items of value in your car:
On Saturday night (4/9) – Sunday Morning (4/10) someone broke into my car parked on Blaine St. I noticed because I saw a stack of shuffled papers around and my iPod missing, they also took half of an old checkbook that fell off my laptop. I reported the incident to the police and talked to the neighbors so they are aware.
