Chinni 3Friendly, curious, playful and on the move exploring – that’s Chili and Chinni! They are a lovingly bonded, brother and sister pair of sociable chinchillas who have been at the shelter since March 2016. They are the perfect pair!

Chili is approximately 4 years old and Chinni is approximately 1 year old. They both have beautiful gray-black fur that is velvety soft to the touch, and inquisitive brown eyes. They are microchipped and neutered.

Chili 1Chili and Chinni love playtime outside of their cage. They will run around, jump and explore their surroundings. They both like to explore vertical space and need plenty of play stimulation chew toys – their favorites are applewood and willow sticks!

They are both very friendly chins who come out of their cages for treats and love! Their temperaments are becoming more confident and always curious. They’ll go anywhere you let them and both get along with people. They will tolerate some petting and handling, but are not big snugglers.

Chili 2Chili and Chinni (SAS ID #31172336 and 31172337) are looking forward to finding a good loving forever home. Come meet them in the Critter Room at the Seattle Animal Shelter.

More about chinchillas: Chinchillas are native to the mountains of South America where they are a mostly nocturnal (active dusk to dawn). They are most comfortable indoors in a dry cool climate (60-70 degrees).

Chinni 1Pet chinchillas are fantastic jumpers and need a large habitat (at least 3’ x 2’ per animal). Select a habitat cage that has no plastic-coated wire, otherwise your pet chinchilla can gnaw off the plastic coating and become ill. Try to provide a habitat cage with openings no larger than 1” x 2” – they can squeeze through very small openings.

Chinchillas are social animals; they do best with a companion, and need daily interaction with their human friends. To stay healthy and happy they need supervised exercise periods outside their habitat cage. They should be fed high-quality alfalfa pellets, timothy hay, and fresh green vegetables. Treats include small portions of fruit (berries and raisins).

Chinni 2Bath-time is fun-time, but without any water. Chinchillas take dust baths twice a week. Chinchilla dust is readily available at pet or feed stores. You can see Chili and Chinni playing in their dust bowl in this video.

Your chinchilla will need annual vet checks and with proper care and lots of love can live to be 10-15 years old. You are expected to make a lifetime commitment to your chins and they should be treated as an integral part of the family. The primary caregiver must be a responsible adult, and young children should always be supervised when interacting with your chins and instructed on proper approach and handling. Household cats or dogs should, of course, also be carefully supervised at all times and introduced in a calm and quiet manner.

Come on down and meet Chili and Chinni today!
