The Queen Anne Helpline: helping our Queen Anne neighbors in need

We’ve had a few posts on the upcoming Crown of Queen Anne Fun Run/Walk this Saturday, and perhaps you’ve already registered, and if so, great! If not, here’s a great reason why you should – the Queen Anne Helpline. If you’re not familiar with the Helpline, read on.

Queen Anne HelplineI met with Lisa Moore, Executive Director of the Queen Anne Helpline, to learn more and provide information to Queen Anne View readers who may not be familiar with the organization. Proceeds from Fun Run registrations go directly to the Helpline, so if you’re participating, your dollars are going to a great local organization.

The Queen Anne Helpline is a local non-profit organization located right here on Queen Anne with the goal of helping our neighbors in need. What exactly does that mean? Well, likely more than you think. The Queen Anne Helpline provides assistance to residents of Queen Anne and Magnolia (zip codes 98109, 98119, 98199) in various forms, depending on what a neighbor needs. Here are a few examples of what the Helpline offers:

  • Financial assistance with rent, utilities, phone bills
  • Safety net assistance for one-time crisis situations (job loss, medical issues)
  • Financial support for continuing education and job training
  • Clothing bank for adults
  • Non-perishable food bank
  • Emergency food assistance
  • King Count Metro bus passes

All of these services are provided to Queen Anne neighbors who have experienced financial hardships, whether they are elderly, disabled, working but struggling to make ends meet, and those who are in transitional housing or shelters. Examples include: assisting a single mom going back to school to learn new job skills; working with a low-income family who occasionally needs food or clothing; helping a low-income senior pay her utility bills.

The Queen Anne Helpline has a simple statement of values: All clients are treated with dignity, respect, and strict confidentiality. The Helpline does not discriminate in any way, and is a compassionate, friendly, and positive organization with the following goals:

  • Help our neighbors
  • Represent our community
  • Do greater good

When I spoke with Lisa, I heard wonderful stories of how the organization has helped a wide range of our Queen Anne neighbors – they are doing fantastic work and it’s a positive, happy environment. They’ve helped so many of our neighbors, and by registering for the Fun Run, you can too!
