The main characters in Maria Semple’s “Where’d You Go Bernadette” live on Queen Anne – no spoilers – and while some literary license is taken, if you live on Queen Anne (or in Seattle), it’s a fun read. Haiti Babi is a small social enterprise business founded by Queen Anne resident Katlin Jackson and UW design student Kari Davidson. Haiti Babi provides safe, stable, fair-wage jobs for Haitian mothers, creating handmade baby blankets to support their families. Haiti Babi is just shy of a year old, and to date it has set up a Haitian office with a nonprofit partner, trained the first four Haitian employees, and won two start-up business awards including “Best Global Impact” at the HUB Seattle SocEnt Weekend.
To raise money for the first production run of blankets, Haiti Babi is using Indiegogo, an international crowdfunding platform. The baby blankets are for sale via the fundraising site, and will be available for sale on the Haiti Babi web site in the new year.
