Those of you who are members of the relatively new Om Lifestyle & Wellness have probably already heard the news: the Lower Queen Anne gym has closed its doors. For good.
Om, which has been closed for the past week and a half due to water damage, was expected to reopen yesterday, Monday, July 12, as per a message on the its website. However yesterday afternoon a mass email was sent out by the owner to the gym’s members (myself included) announcing that the closure would be permanent:
Dear Om Members,
First, I apologize for the delayed communications regarding the current issues with the club. We have not been able to access any of our databases in order to contact anyone. As most of the older members are aware, Om has sustained multiple incidents of major water damage over the past 9 months, as well as, constant water leaks that continue to destroy the facility. We have been trying to work with the landlord, Archstone Smith, over the past several months in order to resolve these issues as well as the underlaying issues of the structure damage to the building. Archstone has refused to adequately address these issues.
This has forced Om to make a decision in the best interest of our members and the business. We have decided the only available alternative is to shut down the club and transfer all membership to another local club.
We will have further information available, today or tomorrow, regarding the membership transfers.
It is with much disappointment that we had to come to this decision, however, we did not have any other real alternative. I understand that some members are upset with the past and current issues, and if it was under my power, this would not happen.
I greatly apologize for this inconvenience.
Ryan Matthews
Om Lifestyle and Wellness
I haven’t heard anything else, but will keep the community posted on which gym Om will be transferring its memberships to, if there will be refunds, and how members may go about retrieving any personal items that may have been left inside the gym (as we’ve heard that all of the equipment has already been removed from the building). If you have any more information or are a member who would like to share your questions or concerns, please comment below.

I am a member and did not receive an email or any other communication from the gym; I don’t know if this is fraud or bankruptcy (and also don’t know if it’s legit for them to transfer memberships since they were already “closed” when they did it and did not give advance notice) but I’ve put in a report to Seattle police/fraud; luckily, I’m not out much money but I’m sure others are and feel bad for the instructors who you can probably bet were not paid.

I preapid 6 months and am currently out $80+; however my boyfriend prepaid a year and is out $400+. Neither of us want to transfer membership. Any updates would be great.

I’m also a member, but received no e-mail. Granted, I’d only been a member for about two weeks before the closure. What a disappointment! I called my bank and they said my only recourse would be to file a claim for the money paid. I asked about future transactions and they gave me the option of obtaining a new card with a new cc number. Such a hassle. I was on a month to month membership, and won’t be transferring to a new gym. The only other neighborhood gym I know of is Rain, which has horrible reviews online and an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. No thank you!

I was so sad to hear this, I absolutely loved this gym and shopped around a lot before I settled. I do not think there are others nearby that could satisfy what I found in this gym. Hopefully they get things worked out, without any major losses and reopen in another location at some point. I will however feel very violated if they pass on my credit card info for monthly membership fees to another gym without my approval. I am on pre-paid now and moving to month-to-month soon. If Om reads this, please give us the option to opt-out of the transfer. Thank you!

I work nearby and walked by Om just now. It is complete empty! I know the gym there prior claimed “water damage” too, but how interesting that Om management had time to clear out ALL the equipment, yet they couldn’t access the database? Something shady is definitely going on! There are signs all over the front door for Rain Fitness, a gym I have heard nothing but bad things about. Any word on ProRobics? Good gym?

Om is on the same site as the old Queen Anne Fitness, which then became Allstar Fitness. I know Allstar had NUMEROUS and long-time problems with water intrusion and damage in that building. During really rainy weather, there would be buckets all over the gym to catch leaks. Too bad Om suffered the same fate.

I too am feeling inconvenienced and taken advantage of. I did however receive an offer for Rain Fitness from a nice young man at the front doors of Om yesterday. While he could not answer questions about Om, he did encourage me to stop by Rain Fitness. I did, toured the facility and find it to be excitingly different. While I cannot speak for others, it was a pleasant surprise to an anxious situation, and am looking forward to exercising there.

Given where I live, I switched to ProRobics for their summer special. Rain is too far for me, but a great gym. ProRo is not very fancy, but everything works and the equipment is better than Om’s. I am surprised to read that Om actually salvaged their equipment. Perhaps for Antiques Road Show?
If anyone knows how to get one’s pre-paid monies back from Ryan, could they post?
Funny, I never saw or heard anything regarding water damage when I was at Om unless you consider that fountain in the lobby as damage, esthetic damage certainly. I did read on Yelp that there was a sheriff-like sign to “pay or vacate” which doesn’t sound good.
Oh, I never got an email from Om either.

I was not too surprised to see Om go away. They already had 2 strikes against them when they opened.
I recommend checking out Denali Fitness in Interbay. The place is very nice and they don’t play any games with memberships. They also seem to have great reviews.

I did not receive an e-mail or any information either even though I wrote to the contact information on the web site and included full contact information. I am owed for 9 more months to the tune of about $270. I would like someone to contact me and let me know about options.

I was a member of Om too, I joined about 2 weeks before they closed and lost the 3 month prepayment of $100.
I was very disappointed in OM’s departure; I had searched around for a gym close-by that wasn’t one large exercise-and-sweat-together room ( 24hr Express, I’m looking at you…NO locker room???) I had left OAC in Ballard which is very nice and has secluded separate rooms but is expensive, and without a car OM was very convenient.
I believe the owner of Om was extremely shady on this deal, they sent only a few ‘we are closed’ letters out ( to older members; I did not receive one). The letter states they are looking into transferring the memberships to another gym. (To the poster above; they can not transfer your membership to another gym without your approval or knowledge, so you should not have to worry about that.) Matter of fact, you should not worry at all, as I believe OM absconded with all the money and are not trying to work out transferring memberships AT ALL. If they had, they would have posted the info on the gym door, yet the only info posted there is a CLOSED sign; and of course, other gyms have posted their own info on OM’s dark door in hopes of snagging some of us who are now lost and gym-less. ( Pro-Botics is on the top of QA and is offering OM members the rest of July for free to try their club).
One bit of news: we do not have to take this lying down. I see that some people have lost quite a bit of money. We can contact the Attorney General or the BBB; we have paid for a service and they have shirked it without trying to compensate us either with money or a similar service. I have heard that this has happened before with other gyms and if action is brought against them, they will have to pay us 3x the amount we spent for those services. For those that spent $400 I am sure $1200 might sound very welcome.
I will see if I can find out any more info on this. I hope others might want to too.

The only “news” aspect of this story is how Om managed to conduct business on that site as long as it did. There is a chronic design flaw and structural problems with that are of that building and there has been since it was finished in the early ’90s. I was a member of the Gateway Club which was taken over by Allstar almost ten years ago. I used to use that facility regularly for its convenience until Allstar chose not to renew it’s lease a couple of years ago because of chronic problems with leaking water and ventilation. The men’s showers were awful because of the ventilation issue.
I’m disappointed to see a bunch of comments flying off the handle about Om engaging in fraud. I don’t have any basis for giving credence to those allegations. What basis do you have for them? Based on what I know about the history of the building I would wonder first whether Om was itself defrauded by the landlord. Were these chronic problems fully and adequately disclosed before they signed the lease? If water got into their computer server they may very well have had to rely on an offsite backup of their database. Their business is ruined. I’m sorry about the inconvenience and loss of up to a few $100s of dollars at most of prepaid dues (was prepayment mandatory?) but I’m far more sympathetic to the employees of Om who have no job and the owners who are out of business. Who knows how much they have lost? I’m thinking all of them and you are victims of the landlord’s negligence at least (and, perhaps, fraud) in failing to fix the problems that lead to Allstar’s nonrenewal.
I like both of Allstar’s downtown facilities (Medical-Dental at Westlake, accessible via monorail; and Municipal Tower, which validates parking in the evenings and early mornings plus weekends for $3/mo.). Great facilities, good trainers, clean and a great jacuzzi at the Muni Tower.
13 sullinsea // Jul 15, 2010 at 3:19 pm
By the way … I remember noting the ventilation and leaking problems when I toured the original club right after the building was finished in the early ’90s.
14 Kari // Jul 15, 2010 at 3:43 pm
What basis? Paying for services and not receiving said services is a type of fraud. I’m sure that Om did indeed know about the problems with All-star’s leaks. What business would move into a building and not ask why the previous business moved out especially when the incoming business is offering the exact same services? Most likely when OM toured the building they hired a professional to look over the space, the pipes, electricity, sewage, and conduits much like a prospective home owner does. I am sure Ryan probably saw the excessively stained ceilings and…and got a fantastic deal on the lease.
DO not feel bad for the owner he has taken (nay, cheated) money from many, many people—some who have prepaid a year which is over $400 or more.
The trainers and workers will most likely do just fine. I had an appointment set with a trainer for this week and had planned on paying for 10 sessions. He called me and told me of Om’s closure and told me he is going to a nearby gym and asked if I could do the sessions with him there. I didn’t confirm but I think he would have honored the payment I was to make even thought I would have to pay of the new gym fee. These trainers have degrees and some have many degrees, they will be able to find jobs quickly or even become entrepreneurial and put up signs at coffee shops–if needed—to offer their service at, say, Green Lake for separate or group boot camps.

Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!

We have lived in the Archstone building that OM fitness used to occupy, for 3 years now. When we moved in, it was owned by a company called Oakwood.
Something is not right here.I do expect my prepaid membership to be refunded. It is the only right thing to do. BTW- low blow on Ryans part for trying to blame his bad business practices on the Landlord.
19 sullinsea // Jul 22, 2010 at 9:31 am
You cannot, with intellectual honesty at least, accuse someone of fraud without evidence the person had knowledge and intent. There is no such evidence.
Just because you paid for services and did not receive said services does not mean the business owner engaged in “a type of fraud” (whatever that means). Fraud is fraud. There are no “types.”
You have no evidence that “Om did indeed know about the problems with All-star’s leaks.” You have no idea whatsoever whether the Oakwood landlord made assurances to Om that it did not foolow through on.
I’m not saying this is not an unfortunate situation. I’m not saying the members do not have a contractual right to those services and should not be compensated by Om for their damages on their contract. But I am most certainly sick to my soul of reflexive demonization of people whenever something goes wrong. That’s not right. “You shall not bear false witnesss against your neighbor.” It’s also pointless and unnecessary indulgence in hate. Sue them on your contract. That’s your right. But unless and until evidence of knowledge and intent surfaces stop baselessly slandering someone by accusing them of fraud.

Any other members had their debit card info compromised around this time? We had fraudulent charges come out right after the gym closed–I am not saying these two events are connected, but it seems like a strange coincidence, since we don’t have any other direct withdrawals set up.
