Residents who live near the Aurora Bridge may be in for some sleepless nights as work gets underway to build a fence across the City of Seattle Landmark. The work starts Monday, April 19 and will last for one month.
Two lanes of traffic across the bridge will be closed Sunday through Thursday for construction from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. According to WSDOT, the work will be incredibly noisy. In fact, they’re even offering free industrial strength earplugs for residents who call 206-267-6019.
The Aurora Bridge has been the scene of countless suicides, and officials hope this new fence will discourage would-be jumpers. The Seattle Landmark and Preservation Board approved the “suicide fence” back in July, despite opposition from the Queen Anne Community Council. The project is estimated to cost $8.1 million. You know, a lot of people are going to hurt themselves climbing over that fence. I'm thinking, “Litigation. Long and costly litigation.”

After this fence goes up, nobody will kill themselves anymore. They'll walk to the fence, and just turn away and walk home. Awesome!

The fence is not designed to stop suicides. It's to stop the idiots from landing on innocent people below. I think this is necessary, but 8 million dollars? Why is everything 8 million dollars?

I bet it'll stop a decent percentage of jumpers. And now I'll actually be tempted to walk across it without fear of being bumped into and falling over the railing. It's only 3 feet high currently and feel dangerous just being near it.

I lost a friend who jumped off the bridge, and I don't think a fence will prevent people intent on suicide. It will protect the witnesses below from the trauma, and that's worth something, but $8.1m? When we have waitlists at rehab centers?

Build a concrete box at the bottom with no roof and a painted target. Maybe even add a sign on the bridge as the designated suicide location. Cheap, easy to clean up, and no traumatized witnesses.

I've never been suicidal, so maybe my perspective is meaningless, but I wouldn't want to go out so messily. I would much rather take a bunch of pills and go to sleep. Flying off a bridge and possibly hurting people below does not sound like fun to me. However, these people can't be in a logical state of mind.
