Daily news blog for Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood

emmer&rye opens on top of the hill today

January 28th, 2010 · 7 Comments

If you’ve been counting down the days to the emmer&rye opening since we first reported the new “seasonally inspired, locally derived” restaurant would be taking over the Julia’s on Queen Anne Ave, wait no more–the 70-seat restaurant is opening tonight.

emmer&rye

Chef Seth Caswell’s (formerly of Stumbling Goat Bistro) newest creation utilizes the local agriculture of the Pacific Northwest to explore seasonal dishes –- what Caswell calls “new American cuisine.” Food writer and Queen Anne resident Lorna Yee attended a sneak peak of the restaurant earlier this week and had this to say: “The reasonably priced menu, ranging from $4-$17 and made up almost entirely of local ingredients, feels exactly right for this economy.” Read her full preview in Seattle magazine.

emmer&rye will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. today and tomorrow, and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, serving brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Get a look at the menu here. Call 206-282-0680 for more information or to make a reservation. Read our emmer&rye preview here.

just don't be fooled the owners are still the Julia's people. they were met with such disdain after charging a fee for high-chairs and baby clean up, that they never could rebound, so they have re-branded the place and put a new chef in charge to fool us all into thing that it is a new group moving into the neighborhood! Iy is still the Julia's owners that you will be supporting, so don't be fooled

The Julia's owners may have a partial stake in the business, but the concept and brand and vision are all Seth Caswell's. Caswell concieved emmer&rye over a year ago and it's style, food and approach could not be more different from Julia's. I went on opening night and had a wonderful meal, one of the best I've had in Seattle.

and are you a family member? i know the julia's people like to write their own false compliments on these things.
i hope that this restaurant of theirs will at least have one legal cook, none of the other places they try to run do. hopefully this poor seth fellow won't let them touch a thing or they will run this one into the ground too.
