What should replace Seattle Center’s Fun Forest?

January 4th, 2010 · 14 Comments

On Thursday, December 21, 2009 half of the rides at Seattle Center’s Fun Forest – those north of the SC Monorail station – were hauled away, leaving 68,000 square feet open for new attractions. The space will be used to try out new vendors and temporary projects from May 2010 to December 31, 2011, in the hopes of finding ideas to implement into the Century 21 Master Plan, a $570 million, 20-year investment in the revitalization of Seattle Center and in homage of the 1962 World’s Fair that brought it – and the Fun Forest – to the city.

Seattle Center is looking for proposals for the space – ranging from single events to seasonal or longer activities and installations – before the start of six months of celebrations in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the World’s Fair, from April to October 2012. The managers are looking for creative ways to use the paved space that include day-long activities and events to those several weeks in length, with the overall aim of finding the best concept that contributes to “furthering the mission of the Center.”

Request for Proposal (.pdf) responses are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2010 to Neal Erickson, Seattle Center Redevelopment, 305 Harrison Street, Room #109, Seattle, WA 98109 (send eight copies). A short list of applicants will then be selected for interviews by February 1. Final selections will be made by February 22 and contracts will be signed by late March. The project details and requirements are outlined in the RFP. Inquires and responses will be published on the website tomorrow, Tuesday, January 5. You can view current bidders here.

In the meantime, the Fun Forest rides south of the monorail station will stay in place and continue to run.
