Recent burglaries on QA & what you can do

October 15th, 2009 by Thea

There have been several burglaries on the hill in the past month, including two daytime forced entries – one in Lower Queen Anne on the 300 block of Galer, and one in Magnolia on Viewmont Way – on September 29th and 30th. Although officials said there was no concrete link between the two crimes, burglary detectives who responded to both sites, said that while canvassing the neighborhoods many people came out of their homes and told them that they had seen suspicious people wandering around their block hours earlier but neglected to report the suspicious activity.

Yesterday Seattle Police Department Crime Prevention Officer Terrie Johnston informed me that these two instances were not the only, or even most recent, burglaries on the hill. “There have been 13 residential burglaries this month so far; 8 on Magnolia and 5 on Queen Anne. In only 3 of the burglaries did the criminal use any force, the other 9 entries were made through open and unlocked doors/windows,” she wrote.

Since 9 of the 13 burglary entries were made without force, officials would like to emphasize that many future incidences like these could be avoided by taking a few extra safety precautions. Remember to lock your doors and windows when leaving the house, even if it’s just for a moment. Keep a light on in front and back entrances at night.  Know your neighbors, keep their numbers, and look out for each other. And most importantly, if you see something suspicious, report it.

“Please remember, that 911 is for reporting suspicious activity too! When we say that you are our eyes and ears, this is because we know most criminals do not commit crimes when police officers are watching. We catch burglars in the act thanks to watchful neighbors. Officers responding to a call of suspicious activity might have frightened off these suspects. Many neighbors tell me they saw or heard something odd, but talked themselves out of calling 9-1-1. They feel awful when they realize their gut feelings were correct and they could have possibly deterred the crime,” Johnston wrote.

According to Johnston, if you suspect that your house has been burglarized, the best thing to do is to report it immediately, from the safety of another location if you can. She also says you should try to leave the scene as uncontaminated as possible so that no evidence is destroyed.

Johnston offers free home security surveys and is the go-to contact if you would like to join one of the many of block watch groups on Queen Anne, or start your own. Contact Johnston for more information at (206) 684-4741 or at terrie.johnston@seattle.gov.

Last chance for fall flowers before the ice sets in

October 14th, 2009 by Thea

A few days ago I received a very excited email from Eat Local owner Greg Conner informing me that a local flowers vendor would be setting up a flower farm outside his Queen Anne store on Thursdays and possibly Sundays until the “first frost hits their farm.”

Xiong Cha, a local farmer who owns Cha Garden in Snohomish, has been a weekly staple at the Queen Anne Farmers Market this year.  When the market closed for the season two weeks ago, Xiong began to look for a new location on Queen Anne so that he could continue to bring flowers to the neighborhood as long as the weather permitted.

“Xiong approached me because the Queen Anne Farmers Market ended but he still had flowers growing so we are letting him use the place in front of the store to sell his beautiful flowers,” Conner said.

Xiong had planned to be in front of Eat Local twice a week for the next few weeks, but when I spoke to him this afternoon, he informed me that tomorrow would be his last day on the hill. Last weekend Xiong found that the ice had set in on his farm, marking the end of his flower season until May.

“The ice killed all my flowers,” Xiong said. “I thought I would have two more weeks, but last Saturday morning when I came in, they were all dead.”

Xiong says he still has quite a few yellow flowers left, along with those he was either able to salvage or were picked before Saturday, and he hopes to be in front of Eat Local selling beautiful bouquets from around 10 a.m. tomorrow to 6:30 or 7 p.m. It might be the last time for this year, but Xiong says he plans to return to the Queen Anne Farmers Market circuit next season, and will be out in front of Eat Local again in May, when his flowers have begun to grow again.

October 14th, 2009 by Thea

If you’re traveling out and around Queen Anne today, keep on the look out for lane closures on the 15th Ave N/NW corridor that corners this hill. The Seattle Department of Transportation announced today that a contractor working with SDOT will be installing a conduit daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. this week and next. This work will allow the future instillation of a signal cabinet upgrade and traffic camera at this location.

Both today, Wednesday, October 14 and tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, the contractor will be closing the inside southbound lane on 15th Ave W at W Emerson St. The inside northbound lane on Leary Ave. NW will also be closed so that work can be done on the northbound ramp to 15th Ave NW.

Suicide attempt on Aurora Bridge

October 14th, 2009 by Thea

Fremont Universe reported that a man jumped off the Aurora Bridge and was pulled from the water about 7:30 this morning. Early reports said that he may survive. Medics began treatment near the Adobe buildings, and they took him to Harborview Medical Center. This is the third reported suicide attempt from the Aurora Bridge in just over a week. Yesterday, a Fremont Universe reader told them a man jumped to his death, and they reported last week about another suicide from the bridge.

Suicides are a big issue for on the Aurora Bridge between Queen Anne and Fremont — especially for the hundreds of people who live and work near the bridge. The state is preparing to build a suicide barrier on the Aurora Bridge beginning early next year. (Photo by WSDOT of a mock up panel installed as a test on March 29th.)

One Fremont Universe reader commented after hearing sirens this morning. Michael wrote,

It was a 20 year old male who jumped. We live right near there and heard the sirens so checked the 911 mashup which has a live link to 911 radio. http://www.public911.com/911/

According (to the 911 radio) just now he was pulled from the water without a heart beat (asytole) and has a collapsed lung on the right side and they have been unable to get a heart beat but have intubated him (put a tube down his throat to breath) and started 2 IVs (to give him meds and keep his blood pressure up as he is probably bleeding internally). Although he is young sadly I doubt he will survive given the height and his vitals.

The Queen Anne Halloween lineup is here

October 13th, 2009 by Thea

With Halloween just a couple of weeks out, Queen Anne is gearing up for its many festivities. The Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association is putting on its annual Trick or Treat festival on Saturday, October 31. From 3-5 p.m. merchants will be handing out candy to kids on Queen Anne Ave N between Galer and McGraw.

As the Trick or Treat is always a busy event, UQAMA has taken measures to ensure participant safety, putting funds together to provide for officer assisted traffic control on the day of the event at the intersections of Queen Anne Ave and Boston, and Queen Anne Ave and Crockett.

The Queen Anne Farmers Market is also making a special return appearance for All Hallows Eve. Their “Pork & Gourds” Halloween market and street food fair will be filled with all things spooky (and delicious, of course!) Stock up on all you need for hearty fall cooking from 3-7 p.m. at Queen Anne Ave N and Crockett. Farm stalls will include Local Roots, Baird Orchards and Full Circle. There will also be some delicious street food vendors out to celebrate the holiday in style, including Maximus Minimus, Skillet, Kaosamai Thai, Dante’s Inferno Dogs and Patty Pan Grill. This special event will be a fundraiser for Queen Anne’s very own nonprofit market.

Enjoy tunes by The Blair Street Mugwumps from 3-5 p.m. At 4 p.m. there will be a Pumpkin Pie Contest, judged by Lorna Yee, food writer at Seattle magazine and The Cookbook Chronicles, and author The Newlywed Kitchen: Delicious Meals for Couples Cooking Together, which is coming out soon. After the remarkable turnout the market had at their 1st Annual Blue Ribbon Pie Contest, the Pumpkin Pie Contest will be limited to the first ten registrants. Pies will be judged based on taste, appearance, technique and creativity. Because this event is a fundraiser, registration will be $10, to be collected at the contest. The first prize winner will be awarded a Le Creuset pumpkin cocotte (cast iron casserole), and the second prize winner will get a lunch for two at the Belltown Bakery Boulangerie Nantaise. As of this afternoon, there were still six places available, so hurry! To register email qafarmersmarket@gmail.com.

At 5 p.m. there will be a Creative Costume Contest for adults and kids ages 16 and up. Registration for the contest is $10, and the top prize winner will walk away with a $100 gift certificate to How to Cook a Wolf. So get a head start on your creative costume today! For rules and to register, email Julie Whitehorn at qafarmersmarket@gmail.com.

(Thanks to Greg and the Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association for the picture).

City Light talks about QA power outages tonight

October 13th, 2009 by Thea

Just a reminder that Seattle City Light is hosting a public meeting tonight to discuss the planned power outage, and subsequent unplanned blackout in Queen Anne and Magnolia over the last few weeks. Superintendent Jorge Carrasco has invited the community to join in today, Tuesday, October 13, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Rainier Room at Seattle Center (northwest corner).

There have been three power outages on Queen Anne over the last several weeks. The first was on Wednesday, September 16. The second was a scheduled outage on Saturday, September 26 to repair damage from the previous blackout, which led to an unplanned outage later that day. The third outage occurred the next day, Sunday, September 27, knocking out power to 10,000 in Queen Anne and Magnolia for much of the night.

Small crowd welcomes new Whole Foods

October 13th, 2009 by Thea

A small crowd gathered for the opening ceremonies outside the new Interbay Whole Foods at 8 a.m. this morning. Then the doors were open and shoppers were invited inside.

Many in the crowd were connected to the store and there was no rush of shoppers waiting to get inside.  A few folks did grab shopping carts and began to load up. The Interbay Whole Foods employs about 140 people who seemed eager to show off their new store to shoppers.

The shopping complex anchored by Whole Foods has slowly filled up with other retail outlets. The Magic Dragon Chinese Restaurant is now open along with Peet’s Coffee and Tea, Subway and a dry cleaner.

Whole Foods decided to build a smaller store in the Interbay Urban Center than originally planned and the space next door is still available for lease.

Whole Foods all set to open tomorrow

October 12th, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

Today was preview day for the new Whole Foods in Interbay.

The pumpkins are stacked out front, the shelves are stocked, even the cupcakes are frosted and ready for tomorrow’s grand opening.

Vicky Foley, the spokeswoman for Whole Foods, says that this is one of the smaller stores in the Seattle area, but it is full of local products. They have local produce, local wine, lotions by Ballard Organics and sushi made by Blue C.

The Allegro Espresso Bar will open at 7 a.m. each morning and will feature a Kombucha bar brewed by Townshend’s Tea Company in Portland.

Just down the counter and spanning most of the east wall is gelato, a pizzeria station, a burrito bar and sandwich bar followed by a bakery and plenty of gourmet cheese.

There is a separate little room at the front of the store near the espresso bar that is the “community room” that will have free wi-fi.

Forget the traditional ribbon-cutting, tomorrow there will be a “bread-breaking ceremony” at 8 a.m. to officially open the new store.

Meeting on school boundary maps tonight

October 12th, 2009 by Thea

Seattle Public Schools is holding a public meeting to discuss the new student assignment boundary maps today, Monday, October 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at McClure Middle School (located at 1915 1st Ave W on the top of the hill).

These changes came as part of the Student Assignment Plan (.pdf) which was approved in June, changing the way students are divvied up among schools and basing it on address rather than a number of other factors. As part of this plan, the district wants to reopen five schools throughout the city, including Old Hay on Queen Anne in Queen Anne.

The public is invited to the meeting tonight to ask questions and discuss the new boundary maps, which will be voted on by the School Board on November 18th.

If you can’t make it to tonight’s meeting, there are several other taking place in our neighboring communities. See a full list of meeting times and locations, click here.

City Council to vote on Fire Station 20 today

October 12th, 2009 by Thea

Today the Seattle City Council will finally vote on where to put Fire Station 20. Last week the Council’s Public Safety, Human Services and Education Committee voted to move Fire Station 20 from its current location at 13th Avenue West and West Dravus Street to 15th Avenue West and West Armour Street. Still there has been much controversy surrounding this preferred location over the last few years, especially from community members who dispute the potential noise it will bring to residents living nearby.

Fire Station 20 was build in 1949, and is considered by Mayor Nickels to be in the worst shape of the 33 fire stations in the city. If moved to the new location, the station would have access to Magnolia, Interbay, Ballard, South Lake Union and parts of downtown in addition to Queen Anne and Uptown.

The proposal will go before the full council for a final vote today, at 2 p.m. Community members will be able to make a last attempt at influencing the outcome during the public comment section of the meeting, which will last 15 minutes (each member may publicly address the council for 2 minutes). See today’s City Council agenda here. For more information, read last week’s story.
