“350″ from the Space Needle for climate change

October 22nd, 2009 · Comments

This Saturday, October 24 is International Day of Climate Action, and 350.org, a non-profit dedicated “to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis,” has helped organize over 4,500 events in 173 countries all over the world, including right here in Queen Anne.

The number 350 represents the upper safe limit of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Currently we’re at 385, and according to climate scientists we must reverse this number in order to sustain our planet and life. For this reason 350.org is asking people all over the world to participate in various events, and commit to at least three things they can do to in their homes and communities to build greener, more sustainable living.

A reader sent us the following video about an action taking place at Seattle Center this weekend.

On Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. exhibitors will gather at Seattle Center Alki Room, where there will also be a live screening of events going on around the world. At 3 p.m. 350.org members and participants will meet at the Seattle Center Fountain and arrange themselves to spell out “350″, with the fountain as the outline for the “0″. At 3:50 photographers will be snapping pictures of the group from the Space Needle observation deck.

The entire action is a “pack-it-in pack-it-out zero waste event,” according to the website. And they’re still looking for participants and volunteers to take peoples’ pledges and help organize the “350″ demonstration. For more information on the event click here. See the Facebook page here. Follow 350Seattle on Twitter here.

The group is also putting on a 350 Twitter hour, asking participants to tweet @BarackObama the following message: “USA MUST formally adopt the 350ppm CO2 target at Copenhagen 09 – the ONLY WAY to prevent runaway climate change NO EXCUSES!” between the hour of 9-10 a.m. Pacific time (12-1 p.m. Eastern time). See the event page here. They wrote on their website:

President Barack Obama is one of the people with the most power to create a positive outcome at the upcoming Copenhagen meeting. Let’s let him know that the 350 ppm target is the only way to stop the planet tipping into climate crisis. Twitter is an easy, quick, and powerful way to send this message – imagine the impact of thousands of messages flooding his twitter page, all reading exactly the same message. The power of the internet played a huge part in getting Obama elected – now let’s use that power to fight climate change!

There are sister events going on all over Seattle, including in our neighboring communities of Magnolia, Ballard and Belltown. Check the Seattle-area event map for more actions going on around town.

Groups participating in Satruday’s demonstration include CoolMom, SCALLOPS, Climate Solutions, Seattle Parks, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Climate Action Network, WSU Climate Masters, Cool School Challenge, Seattle Green Schools, Seattle Center, ITSCool, EOS Alliance, Moontown Foundation.

Thanks to Gail for the tip!
