A fire that investigators say began in a unit in an apartment complex at 1000 Queen Anne Avenue North at around 2:30 a.m. was contained.
MyNorthwest.com reported the fire this morning. Although the fire was contained, the residents of the 29-unit building were first forced to evacuate while fire officials handled the fire. No one was reported to be injured, although the to occupants of the unit that the fire originated from were evaluated for smoke inhalation. Officials do not yet know what caused the fire.
Update 9:25 a.m.: The Seattle Fire Department has determined that the fire, which they say originated in a two-bedroom unit on the second floor of the five-story building, was accidental (“caused by improper disposal of smoking materials”). The fire was contained to that unit, damage estimated at $125,000.

My girlfriend and I live in this building, The Fairview. We were awakened by one of the two occupants of the burning apt, who ran from floor to floor alerting tenants. We live on the first floor, opposite end of the building, but to look out the patio door and see this bright orange flame blowing out windows I was sure the whole building would be engulfed (it's my first big fire). Fortunately, the Good Ol' SFD was here within moments, and that big nasty fire was extinguished rather easily with some blasts from the hose. Cheers to the SFD, and to the kid who woke everyone up. I never got to ask the two tenants how they were, where they would stay, etc. I hoe they are feeling ok, and aren't feeling too guilty. I just wonder what kind of “smoking materials” they were dealing with…

I was up and heard SFD on the run to Fairview.
Having experienced a near fatal fire myself, that completely destroyed my entire home some years back (arson), I know how traumatizing it can be to experience any fire, even when there are no injuries.
I agree… I have Big Love for SFD! And the one who thought of others and made the rounds to alert them did the right and good thing. I know how panicking it is, and they did have the sense to think of all the others.
So glad all are alright!
