3-year-old found wandering alone late last night

August 22nd, 2009 · Comments

Last night at approximately 9 p.m. officers responded to a call at 9th W. and W. Galer, where they found a 3-year-old boy wandering alone. The child was fully dressed and wearing wool socks. According to the police report, “he appeared to be in good condition and was quite rambunctious.” However, the boy was too young to be able to communicate with the officers or give any information about where he came from. After canvassing the neighborhood for the parents, the officers returned to the west precinct with the boy and notified 911 operators, eventually turning him over to Child Protective Services.

At 11:40 p.m. the boy’s grandparents called 911. According to his grandmother, the boy was put to bed earlier that evening and the grandparents went to watch a movie. The boy then crawled out of his bedroom window, on the ground flood, and wandered three blocks from home before anyone noticed him. Meanwhile, when the grandparents finished their movie they went to check on him, finding him gone and the window open.

After conducting an investigation and an extensive interview, the officers contacted CPS and the boy was returned to his grandparents.

I guess it makes you wonder how many of our missing children wound up missing in just that way. How many 2 or 3 year old kids figured out how to open the window, or sneak out the front door in the middle of the night, wandered out into the darkness never to be seen again?
I have three kids, and I'll be the first to admit that at age 2, 3, even into 4 years old they were always tinkering with the windows, with the doors, with the cabinets, stoves...whatever they could, to open them. Whatever childproofing I did, they'd figure it out, because that's what we do. We tinker, and we figure out how things work until we get it.
I have to watch my kids every second of every day...not to say that they're hellions, or I'm overbearing. I don't sit over them like a gargoyle perched on ledge, but I check in on them every few minutes...not hours. I'd never go an hour without peeking in on my kids. Even when they're sleeping!
I'd never screw the windows shut, or bolt the doors...fire is just as dangerous as going missing, and I don't want to lose my kids to either. So, I watch them, and I make sure that they're aware of the dangers of wandering, and of being taken.
For whatever it's worth, I don't think the grandparents are at fault. I think they learned a valuable lesson, and thank God that baby was found safe and sound.

There should be a lawsuit against the window maker that created a window that could be opened by a 3-yr old to crawl out of! Maybe windows should be banned altogether? There should be a general outrage among citizens and parents against faulty, unsecure windows and the manufacturers. This is egregious.
Oh wait, I guess people should just be responsible for their children?

Well, it has happened. Thank God the baby is okay!
Even though kids this age will wander... It's scary that this little one left after bedtime. Rambunctious indeed! But safe and sound again.
