Queen Anne Community Council comments on Nickerson Street

March 12th, 2009 · 3 Comments

The Queen Anne Community Council has taken a position on the changes that are being made to Nickerson Street.  We reported earlier about the changes that are being considered on Nickerson.  In a letter from the QA Community Council,

Our Council Board endorses the pedestrian safety and bus stop improvements.

Our Council Board opposes any reduction of the number of motor vehicle lanes on Nickerson Avenue for the following reasons.

There is a potential increase in motor vehicle traffic related to the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement construction phases.   Continued additional traffic in the Nickerson Corridor may result from the changes in access routes to/from Interstate 5 and SR99 when the deep bore bypass tunnel is in use.  We expect that there will be an increase in freight movement in this
corridor.  One indication is the major industrial/commercial redevelopment that is taking place along Ewing Street, the Ilahie Project.

We recommend that SDOT utilize , the Lake Washington Ship Canal south bank trail as the alternative route for bicycle traffic rather than the proposed bike lanes on Nickerson.  We recommend Improvements to bike access to the Lake Washington Ship Canal south bank trail at 3rd Avenue North, 3rd Avenue West, and at Jessie Avenue West.

We recommend that the trail connection be completed under the Ballard Bridge connecting to the West Emerson Street bike/pedestrian facility.  Now is the time to complete the connection of the Lake Washington Ship Canal trail’s west end to West Emerson Street and Fishermens Terminal.  We understand that the railroad siding lay-out has been completed, and we ask
that this important connection be constructed.
