Citywide effort to stop new jail

November 11th, 2008 by Miss Kitty

(As seen on the Magnolia Voice.) We know that there is strong oppostion to a new jail in Interbay and now we learn about an effort to make the case that a new jail is not needed in the city at all.  Real Change is holding a strategy session Monday (November 11) to stop another jail from being built in Seattle.

At a Magnolia public hearing in August a crowd of over 250 people grilled city officials with questions regarding the process of choosing the location for the jail that will be built in 2013.  The city is considering four sites in Seattle.  The Interbay site is marked by an X below.

The meeting on Monday will focus on rallying people to the belief that a new jail is an expensive, unnecessary, counterproductive and inhumane investment for Seattle to make.  They are considering the possibility of launching an initiative against the jail to go on the ballot next November.

The meeting is from 5:30-7:30 pm in Hall 6 of the Seattle Labor Temple in Belltown at 2800 1st Ave. The group wants leaders from the service providers, advocacy groups and neighborhood organizations opposed to or concerned by a new jail to come together and strategize.
